Necrospermia

When sperm is dead (or necrotic) in a fresh semen sample, the condition is called Necrospermia or necrospermia. Necrospermia should not be confused with asthenozoospermia, which describes abnormal sperm motility. The sperm don’t move in that case, but they are not dead. Approximately one in 5,000 men have absolute asthenozoospermia, in which all the sperm in a sample are unable to move.

A severe form of necrospermia (more than 80% of sperm are necrotic) is classified as severe necrospermia (50 to 80% of sperm are necrotic). The percentage of necrotic sperm is considered “normal” if 30% or less are necrotic.

Male infertility can be caused by both asthenozoospermia and necrospermia. Typically, there are no apparent symptoms. Therefore, we can make a diagnosis by analyzing the semen. Fortunately, more than 65 percent of male infertility causes remain determined with the testing.

In cases where the cause of Necrospermia has been identified, the first step is to treat that cause. For example, antibiotics may be prescribed in the case of an infection. The treatment for drug addiction is recommended in cases of Necrospermia caused by drug abuse.
